Christmas at Mom’s House – Inglés Esencial 6

Mom's Christmas treeUsually at Christmas, we go to my mom’s house in Truckee, California. Her house is in the mountains where there is a lot of snow. It’s very pretty. She and my stepfather put colored lights around the outside of the house. They always have a big, beautiful Christmas tree that they cut down in the woods. They decorate the house and the tree with ornaments that have been in our family for many years. They have a nativity scene and many handmade decorations.

Christmas Eve dinnerOn Christmas Eve, we have a big Italian dinner with friends and family. First we eat antipasto, drink wine, listen to music, talk, and laugh. For dinner we have lasagna, green salad, fresh bread, fish, and vegetables. Sometimes after dinner we play poker. My mother, brother, sister and I almost always play Scrabble during the day.

At midnight on Christmas Eve, my stepfather makes pasta puttanesca. It’s very spicy and has tomato sauce with lots of garlic and anchovies. He is Italian and making this pasta is one of his family’s traditions. Many children leave cookies and milk out for Santa Claus late at night on Christmas Eve. They believe he brings toys and gifts to fill their stockings.

On Christmas morning we exchange gifts and empty our stockings. Parents or loved ones (mom!) fill the stockings with small gifts, books, toys, and candy. On Christmas day we read, play games (Scrabble!), walk the dogs in the snow, play the piano, sing, play with the dogs, talk, laugh, listen to music, eat snacks and homemade cookies, and help my mom cook a huge meal.

For dinner we have roast turkey with cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, green beans, salad, sweet potatoes, peas, mashed potatoes, and gravy. We drink wine and champagne and toast our family and friends. We feel very thankful to be together and call our loved ones who are not with us. We are usually too full to eat dessert, but we often have pumpkin pie, apple pie, pecan pie and ice cream just in case.

This year I celebrate my first Christmas in Chile. I am very excited because gatherings with my Chilean family are always so much fun. We eat delicious food cooked by my mother-in-law Isabel, drink good Chilean wine and champagne, laugh a lot, talk, and enjoy being together. Merry Christmas!

¡Feliz Navidad!

Merry Christmas! ¡Feliz Navidad!
